CAT (Common Admission Test) is a national level exam conducted for the eligible candidates, seeking admission in the UG and PG Management programmes. The exam is conducted by IIMs on a rotational basis.

The Logical Reasoning paper carries a total of 32 marks. It is divided into 2 parts- analytical and critical reasoning. Wherein, Analytical Reasoning consists questions of coding- decoding, sequence and series, puzzles, direction test and blood relations. The critical reasoning consists of questions where a candidate is required to assume, conclude or define the next course of action etc.

Important Topics under Logical Reasoning

Logical reasoning in CAT is the most scoring section as compared to the other sections. It is a section in which one can gain time, if they have practiced a lot and have a technique. A candidate should be able to answer the questions within 60 minutes maximum.

This section tests the ability of a candidate to apply logic to a certain event. To suit this purpose any number of questions can be asked which is why we now turn our attention to see the pattern of this section and expectations from the upcoming examination.

Previous year analysis of LR Section and Expectations

From the year 2013 to 2015, popular logical reasoning questions were from the topics of distance, direction, coding decoding, data sufficiency, seating arrangement and syllogisms. Syllogism involves logical statements, application of deductive reasoning followed by conclusion.

In the year 2013, maximum LR questions involved puzzles whereas only one question was asked on series completion. Year 2015 saw certain new topics being included in the foray of logical reasoning. Questions on numbers & symbols, facts & figures, calendar and letter interchange were the new entrants.

The upcoming examination is also expected to include few new topics. For a well - rounded preparation candidates may look into questions on cause & effect, non - verbal reasoning and statement – course of action. Questions involving combination of two different concepts may also spring up in the LR section in the coming year.

How to Prepare for LR Section?

For such a diverse section, the grasp on basics and regular practice holds the key. Practice will help the candidate to improve the candidates speed as well as their accuracy.

Candidates can improve their thinking capacity by regularly solving reasoning question from the topics mentioned above from a reliable book.
