Cong. to mark note ban anniversary with demonstration

(Mumbai, Nov 06, 2017):As part of its nationwide drive against demonetisation, the city Congress unit will hold a protest at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai on Wednesday to mark the first anniversary of the note ban.

Congress workers will pay tribute to the people who died while standing in queues outside banks to withdraw money in the aftermath of demonetisation in various parts of the country.

The party had announced to mark the first anniversary of the note ban as a “black day”, after the NDA government announced that it would celebrate November 8 as “anti-black money day”. The government withdrew high-value currency notes from circulation on November 8 last year.

Mumbai Congress unit president Sanjay Nirupam said, “Some 115 people died while standing in queues to withdraw money from their own bank accounts. The decision of demonetisation has affected the poor in the country. We will offer our tributes to those who died.”

He was speaking at a press conference at the party office on Monday.

Mr. Nirupam said the Congress will organise a rally at Juhu beach, where it will hold a condolence meeting. “Some party workers will tonsure their heads as a mark of protest,” Mr. Nirupam said.

He said former chief minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan is scheduled to hold a dialogue with representatives of various sectors.
